12.06.09 - The ANS Synthesizer

Tonight's program features work created on one of the world's really singular electronic instruments - the Russian ANS Synthesizer created by Russian engineer Evgeny Murzin. The ANS produces soundwaves from drawings made on sheets of glass coated with black mastic on which the composer draws pictures which are converted to sound. Tonight's show includes excerpts from the soundtrack to Andrei Tarkovski's film "Solaris," pieces composed for the instrument by some of the great Soviet-era composers (Artemiev, Denisov, Kreitchi, Gubaidulina, and Schnittke), as well as some pieces created by non-Russian experimental composers (Coil and James Fei).
